South Australia

South Australia is a state in the southern central part of the country which covers some of the most arid parts of the continent. It is the fourth largest of Australia’s states and shares its borders with all of the mainland states and the Northern Territory. The state capital is Adelaide, the fifth-largest city in Australia. South Australia has a thriving arts scene and is sometimes known as the ‘Festival State’, with more than 500 festivals taking place there every year.

South Australia’s climate varies from hot and dry in the interior to milder, wetter climates in the south and on the south-east coast. Adelaide generally has mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. It is the driest of all the Australian capital cities. The average rainfall in January and February (summer) is around 20 millimetres, but months with no rain are common. June is the wettest month of the year, averaging around 80 millimetres. The average maximum temperature is 29°C in summer and 15–16°C in winter.

Cellar hop in the Barossa Valley and cycle between vineyards and churches in the Clare Valley. Lose yourself in Adelaide’s sprawling green parklands and visit the picturesque German village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Meet native wildlife on Kangaroo Island and swim with sea lions on the Eyre Peninsula. Four wheel drive past the deep red gorges of the Flinders Ranges and soar over majestic Wilpena Pound. Swim, surf and fish on the pristine beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula and glide past the willow-fringed banks of the Murray River on a houseboat. Dive into shipwrecks and Aboriginal history on the Yorke Peninsula. Explore the fossil- rich Naracoorte Caves on the Limestone Coast.

Information on domestic consumers, including tourism facts, quarterly indicators, market sectors and activities, accommodation, business events and future trends can all be found on the STO’s corporate websites and links have been provided under each state and region.
