ABOUT THIS REGION The High Country is a region of the state of Victoria in Australia. It extends down from the wine regions in the mid north-east of the state such as Rutherglen to the alpine regions to their south such as Falls Creek. The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail is a delightful way for cyclists and walkers to enjoy the Alpine High Country. The High Country Rail Trail is a 35 kilometre, part-gravel part-sealed rail trail on the northern border of Victoria. It runs along the former Cudgewa railway line from Wodonga, along the edge of Lake Hume, to a point just east of the Mitta Mitta River, including a 600 metre bridge over Sandy Creek Inlet. There are plans to eventually extend the trail as far as Cudgewa near Corryong. Breathtaking landscapes, premium cool climate wines, colourful food culture and striking seasonal contrasts distinguish the Alpine Valleys region. Stretching from the snowfields of Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo and Mt Hotham, along the Kiewa and Ovens Rivers, the Alpine Valleys’ vibrant townships of Bright, Myrtleford and Mt. Beauty, as well as the extensive stretches of National Parks ensure a myriad of opportunities for travellers and adventurers.
